Casa Marin wins Decanter International Trophy!!!

Casa Marin goes home with one of world´s most recognized awards: The Decanter International Trophy – Best Sauvignon Blanc in the world over £10.00 – Casa Marin Sauvignon Blanc Cipreses Vineyard – 2009

10.983 wines were participating in Decanter´s World Wine Awards 2010. 208 gold medals were given to the wines that scored 18.5 or above/20. All the gold medal winners from each region were divided into two categories: over-£10.00 and under-£10.00 and re-tasted against the other gold medal winners of their grape variety or style. The best wine from each category won the Regional Trophy. >From the total of 10.983 wines only 99 wines were awarded with the Regional Trophy.

Finally, the 99 Regional Trophy winners of a similar style or variety around the world were competing against each other to decide the International Trophy. From the 10.983 wines only 28 wines could wine the International Trophy. Casa Marin was one of them: BEST SAUVIGNON BLANC IN THE WORLD OVER £10.00!!!

Concours Mondial Du Sauvignon

History is repeating!

In 2007 we participated in the Concours Mondial Du Pinot Noir in Switzerland, here our Pinot Noir Lo Abarca Hills was selected as best Pinot Noir of the World and awarded with the Great Gold Medal!

This year, we decided to participate in the first edition of the Concours Mondial Du Sauvignon in Bordeaux. An international competition with Sauvignon Blancs from France, Germany, Spain, New Zealand, Chile and many more! Out of all those wines, our Sauvignon Blanc Cipreses 2009, from the San Antonio Valley in Lo Abarca, was chosen as Best Unoaked Sauvignon Blanc >€12 in the World and won the Special Trophy!!!

Earlier this month, our Sauvignon Blanc Cipreses was chosen as best Chilean Sauvignon Blanc by the English magazine Decanter and awarded with the Regional Trophy! The 2009 Cipreses has been a great success and I am looking forward to the new vintage of 2010, which looks extraordinary! The 2010 harvest report is coming up soon!

Vamos Chilenos!!! 1-0 Chile – Switzerland!!! Now Chile is leading the group with 6 points. Next match against Spain will tell if Chile goes to the next round and if they have to play against Brasil or Portugal!!

World Cup South Africa – 2010

Chile – Honduras: 1-0

At a quarter to seven the alarm went, it was THE DAY! Chile had to play its first match in the World Cup of South Africa against Honduras. They hadn´t classify for years, but now the time had come! Felipe invited the workers from the vineyard to our house in Lo Abarca. In the “casona” we connected the projector to the TV so we could see the game on a big screen. At 7.15 the first workers arrived! We made sandwiches with ham and cheese and everybody was very excited. I am Dutch, so it is great to see the passion the Chileans have for their country and their national soccer team! In the first half, Chile was playing a very strong game. The first goal was made after 34 minutes by Beausejour from Eastern Island! Everybody jumped up, cheering! And as one of the supporters in the Stadium of Nelspruit put on his flag: “La roja es más fuerte que el 8.8 de Chile”, translated: “the Chilean team is stronger than the 8.8 of Chile”! Finally, Chile won with 1-0 from Honduras! This is the first time in 48 years that Chile won a game at the Wordl Cup. VAMOS CHILE! Next game….Monday, Chile – Switzerland! We will keep you informed!!

Within a few days Marilu will be returning from her journey in Asia. Here she has been the last four weeks to sell her wines. During those days she has been visiting many countries, such as Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and England. She will tell you everything when she is back and when she is recovered from this beautiful trip! Although she is at the other side of the world, she is still appearing in the national newspaper of Chile, “El Mercurio”!

Regional Trophy!

Short news from England

With the Decanter World Wine Awards we won the Regional Trophy with our Sauvignon Blanc Cipresses, check it out at decanter.com!

On the first of september we are invited to the famous Decanter dinner in Londen. During this special evening they will tell us if we won the International Trophy (Best Sauvignon Blanc in the World)! We are very excited! Let´s keep our fingers crossed!

The House of Don Fernando (2)

A quick update

The house of Don Fernando is almost ready! Our “Maestro” has been working very hard together with his son and Cristian, one of our employees in Lo Abarca. At the moment Don Fernando is on holidays, but when he will come back he will have a beautiful new house. For the ones that didn´t read the previous post. Don Fernando lost his house during the earthquake at the 27th of February. I collected money with my friends and family in the Netherlands in order to build for him a new house. Also Casa Marín has financed a great part of the house. As you can see the pictures below, we advanced a lot! We expect the house to be ready within 3 weeks! You are all invited for the house warming party;)!

p.s. The house already survived its first rain fall!

The House of Don Fernando

The house of “Don Fernando”, taken away by the earthquake on the 27th of February

I saw the images on the news and I thought; “Oh God, I am going to do my internship in a disaster area’’. On the 27th of February, Chile and the rest of the world were woken up by a heavy earthquake, 8.8 on the scale of righter, an earthquake which has caused many damages to families and businesses in Chile. At the moment of the earthquake I was in The Netherlands, but thank god my family was alright, without too many damages in their houses. But this was not the case for thousands of other Chileans. The earthquake put Chile upside down.

I am doing my internship in Santiago with Viña Casa Marin for five months. Luckily Viña Casa Marin was not that much affected as the other Chilean vineyards. 300 liters of were washed away and also the roof tiles were broken. The family’s house at the vineyard did suffer important damages. But this is nothing compared to the vineyards that collapsed in the south and total loss of the 125 million of liters of wine in the Chilean wine industry and the many Chileans that lost their lives that night. The sad news came in on the Monday after the earthquake; one of our employees has lost his entire house.

Don Fernando’s house was built on sand and ‘mother nature’ just took it away from him, like it was nothing. He lived there with his son but now he was homeless. He is a very shy, polite and sensitive man that is working for years at Viña Casa Marin. That’s why we decided to help him and to construct a new house for him at the vineyard.

Jamie organized a Charity Action to collect money in the Netherlands, with great results. The duty now is to build a new house for Don Fernando but there were many challenges we had to face. There were no construction workers left, everybody was occupied. Pre-fabricated houses were almost out of stock, besides that the prices of the pre-fabricated houses were rising incredibly and construction materials are scarce. At the moment we are constructing his new house and we hope that it will be finished in a few weeks. We will keep you updated the next month about the construction of Don Fernando’s house!
